So you want to know who I am? Sure. I am the air you breathe, the water you drink, the earth on which you tread, the fire that keeps you warm.
Huh?
Nah, just kidding (maybe).
I am just a fan girl of writing and science, thus I’m interested in steel metallurgy, and therefore, a pocketknife enthusiast. I am very interested in how the differences in steel’s elemental composition, as well as the proportion of those elements can make such a big difference in the resulting steel. I am fascinated by how the particle metallurgy process of manufacturing steel, compared to molten-ingot-formed steel, affects the properties of the resulting metal. I am intrigued by how the detailed steps of the heat treatment process, such as the initial temperature, the method of quenching, the temperature and hold time of the subsequent cryogenic treatment, and then the temperature and hold time of the temper, can have such a profound effect upon the toughness, edge retention, corrosion resistance, and hardness of finished steel. And finally, I am curious about how all of that can be significantly negated by the blade geometry, or the angle of the primary bevel to the blade centerline, applied to the knife blade. Crazy pants!
I am also captivated by the engineering genius of today’s folding knife locks, the beauty of so many knife handle and scale materials, the amazing variety of blade shapes, and the gorgeous colors and designs used on modern pocketknives. So yeah, I’m a fan.
Welcome to Nerdville
And in case you did grok the fact already, I am a science & tech nerd. I love to write about interesting, techy-type topics (buckle up, Buttercup! My posts are very detailed and very long! Grab yourself a 7-course meal and sit down in a comfy chair. You’re in for a long read, and it’ll be a ton of fun!).
Lastly, I have a passion for learning, and this is the primary reason I started this blog. After all, it should be expected that one knows what they are talking about before they start talking! Unfortunately, that’s not always the case. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, so through my (hopefully) well-researched and detailed posts, I want to contribute to its correction as much as I can.
I also have a snarky sense of humor (ya think?), which is why, in addition to SharperApex, I am also known as The Knife Karen and the Bevel Bitch.
My Posts
I am SharperApex and SharperApex is just me. Since I still have to work for a living (there’s no money, so far, in pocketknife blogging), and because my silly posts take a lot of time to develop, I will only be able to publish a limited number of posts every year. As such, I’m looking for very interesting, very special, very popular or very crappy knives to be the subjects of my deep-dive posts (I also write about steels sometimes, when the whim hits me). I promise my posts will be informative, and I hope they will be entertaining as well. Well, 1 out of 2 ain’t bad.
Thanks for stopping by. Please be sure to fill the tip jar as you leave. And whatever you do, “Have A Great Day!”
SharperApex
(aka the Knife Karen or the Bevel Bitch)
P.S.
If you are a manufacturer/designer/reseller of:
- unusually interesting
- truly extra special
- or genuinely popular
pocketknives (PLEASE, I have enough crappy knives to satisfy that category) and you want to get the full SharperApex comprehensive knife review treatment, Let’s make that happen!
Please go to my Contact SharperApex page and send me a message.
Who knows? If I have an opening in my publishing schedule (and your knife is interesting to me!), I might even reply!
But be careful! The Knife Karen can sometimes be happy and joyful, other times thoughtful and contemplative, but sometimes can be a real Bevel Bitch!
